Two of our volunteers travelled to Abilene, Kansas to pick up four greyhounds needing forever homes. They also came home with an even deeper appreciation of the breed and its place in history.
The small cattle town of Abilene has a rich history. It was the hometown of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Wild Bill Hickock served as its Marshall from 1869 to 1871. It is also known as the Greyhound Capital of the Word. Abilene is home of the National Greyhound Association, which oversees the greyhound breed and its registration, and the Greyhound Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame opened in 1973 and celebrates the legacy and majesty of the ancient breed and documents their participation in greyhound racing. The museum is filled with beautiful art, statues, displays and educational materials dedicated to all things greyhound.
